Back to School

In the olden days in Maine, school started after Labor Day so September has always been back to school month for me. It’s been a long time since I looked forward to fresh notebooks and pens, but it seems that I might have caught the spirit this year.

Status:

South Coast released on Audible today. The pre-order has been up for a couple of weeks but it’s ready for you to download.

Cape Grace is in Podium’s queue for a mid-October release.

The audio for the last Shaman’s Tale – Finwell Bay (was Troy Harbor) – should drop on December 31 so you’ll have something upbeat for New Year’s Eve. I’m planning on publishing the ebook in a couple of weeks if the stars align. It’s back from the editor and I need to do a bit of work on it still.

The book I’m co-writing with my daughter has gone out for beta reading and we’re currently revising it a little based on that feedback. It’ll have a new title so we just refer to it in-house as The Barbarian Book. I’m hoping to pass that to my editor as soon as she’s done with the book she’s working on now.

Speaking of my editor, Dark Knight Station: Origins has gone for edits. I’m currently working with a new cover artist and hope to get the edits and the cover together at the same time.

I’m writing the next Ishmael Wang book. It took me a while to find the story I wanted to tell. I kept trying to force the story in a path that just didn’t work. My subconscious knew it but it took a while for my brain to catch on. I’m loving the new direction and I’m back on the horse in terms of writing every day.

What I’m Reading Now:

Warehouse Dreams by Theresa Halvorson.

I read a couple of trad pubbed books in the last month. One on purpose. One that I didn’t realize was trad pubbed when I picked it up. This book has been in my TBR pile for at least a month and I finally got it to the top of the stack.

It’s awesome. A culture clash between people with gifts and those without. I’m about half way through and have no qualms about recommending it whole-heartedly.

Last Words

I’ve been struggling since mid-April. I went to work on editing the books I had in the queue starting in mid-June. In mid-August we had our semi-annual NovelRama event and it lit a fire under me. I’m 40k words into the new book and suddenly have ideas for a new works going forward.

The year is shaping up to be the most productive I’ve had since 2007. I’m cautiously optimistic that the last third of the year will continue the trend and set up 2021 to be even better.

Although I’ve probably just jinxed myself with that.

Ah, well. See you next month.

Safe voyage.

  1. Currently listening to South Coast now! Very excited to hear about the progress on your other works. I mostly listen to audiobooks and your books are one of the few I buy as soon as they are released!
Thank you for all the great stories!

  2. It has been a long while since the last progress report about the audio book adaptations of the Tanyth Fakrport books. Is there any information you can share?

    1. I’ve talked to the producer and they’re re-doing all the narration but there’s nothing by way of answer to the question “When might I actually get some files?”

He’s sitting on a pot-full of money that he can’t collect until I get the files. Eventually he’ll want to get paid for this stuff. 🙂

  3. I am overjoyed at the prospect of more tales from any of your realms… I was forced to tune into Quartershare as a means to limit conversation during a potentially awkward and unpleasant road trip a few years ago, and fell in love with Mr. Wang… and now I have a summertime ritual of floating in a pool/lake listening to the series each summer here in Southern Ontario – it’s a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!
After this summer’s pilgrimage to the Deep Dark, I was delighted to find South Coast & Ravenwood audiobooks as well… I Love your stories and the Timbre of your Voice is engrossing and soothing during these stressful Covid times.
I just wanted to send a giant THANK YOU for your work. I hope it brings you JOY and fulfillment. <3

  4. Thank you for the updates! I love your work, and I really appreciate hearing updates from you. 🙂

  5. Fantastic! Thanks as always for the updates on your work and life. Very much looking forward to the journeys of Ishmael.

  6. Let me see if I remember this correctly:

    11 whelkies purchased
    Bev, Brill, Alicia, Diane
    Christine, but he got Greta’s
    Stacey

I think Ishmael has six left looking for their owners.

You still have stories to tell, Cap’n, and I can’t wait to read them.

    1. Is it worth noting that most of Ish’s friends are women, as are all the people Ish has given whelkies to? Pip has apparently found his path, since Ish originally gave him a shove in the right direction, and he would have been the main male candidate for a whelkie.

  7. I’m very happy to read the update above. I hadn’t checked in for a while. Fantastic Fiction just told me that Finwell Bay was available and it is mine. My sisters who usually don’t read science fiction got started with Quarter Share and kept on reading. I think one is on her second round.

  8. Morning Capt,
Have you seen Tropical Storm Lowell heading for Hawaii? Finwell Bay was a fun read it seemed short, but all your stories seem to slip by too quickly. It was a surprisingly unencumbered story after Cape Grace. I’ve read Cape Grace numerous times and still am unsure if I like it. I’ve two wonderful daughters who assure me none of my good intentions have ruined their life or dove them off. But reading Cape Grace still makes me wonder what mistakes I’ve made that will affect them for a life time.
    Clear Skies,
    Quack
