You miss the point with DRM. The DRM is Amazon’s, to keep people from reading Amazon-published eBooks on anything other than Amazon products. They recently upgraded their DRM, and as far as I know, nobody has decrypted it yet. I got around it by buying an older Kindle Paperwhite. Amazon doesn’t allow you to download eBook files to Kindles anymore, but they still do with Paperwhites. So I download them and load them into Calibre, then use that to put them in my Kindle. More work, but it is possible.
I do the same, BUT. I make sure to actually read the version that gets downloaded to my Kindle by Amazon. If you don’t, the author doesn’t actually get paid. KU is both good and bad, and the new lack of an (easy) download option is annoying, but there’s a reason I keep my very old Paperwhite around.
