You can convert .md file from Obsidian directly to epub using pandoc. It does put and in though.
I use Sigil and those tags seem fine to me except that the preview bolds the italics as well as the bold and it’s hard to see the difference. The files look fine in calibre reader, though.
For me it seems to work better to Export as Epub from Libreoffice. I tried the ODTImport plugin for Sigil and got poor results. The html code in the epubs from Libreoffice are very messy and I don’t see how to get around that except not to use Libreoffice to write. Maybe your Libreoffice files aren’t as loaded with the ones I’ve used to convert. I don’t write in that program, so I’ve used writing from others to test conversions.
