Lord of the Rings Online offered lifetime subscriptions for a short time period, and I seized the opportunity when it presented, and have been playing free for most of the existence of the game, and accumulating “LOTRO Points” each month that I can use to buy premium items in the LOTRO store.
I’ve never understood the appeal of non-consensual PVP in a game such as Eve or the original Ultima Online. It gives sadists, sociopaths and other damaged people the opportunity to grief the honest and law-abiding, and turned the games into prison societies, in which one has to join a large gang in order to have a reasonable chance of living, and the solitary players are viewed simply as prey. One might compare it to feudalism, as well.
I got around the encryption problem (for the moment, at least, until Amazon changes their encryption policy again) by getting a used Kindle Paperwhite. I can still download ebooks via USB, and those don’t have the latest encryption. At some point, I’m sure Amazon will eliminate that loophole and render all the older Kindle and Paperwhite useless. For for now it works.
