Day 2536: Weekend

Another day, another trial. I think this file is marginally better but listening to it, I’m really not happy with the quality. Even with the mic gain pushed almost to nothing, I’m still getting clipping. It’ll have to do until I come up with something better. I’m open to suggestions.

If the clipping comes from your voice, position the mike off axis so you are not speaking directly into it. If the clipping comes from various external sources, turn down the gain control on the mike if it has one I use an older Android app (Tape Machine) that can adjust the gain. I do not know if it os available in the playstore anymore but I could send you the APK.

    Good luck.

I’m already off axis and the Sound Assistant is supposed to pull the input down but I’m not convinced it’s actually working.

When I listen to the native m4a, they’re pretty clean. It’s only when they get into Audacity and I start trying to clean them up and turn them into mp3s that they get crackly. I’ve reloaded today’s file with minimum massaging.

Lots of testing still going on.

Here are some great lapel (lavaliere) mics that work well with Android phones and are suited for outdoor use while walking:

    1. Rode SmartLav+

    Specifically designed for smartphones.

Features a TRRS jack that plugs directly into your Android device’s headphone port or can be used with a TRRS to USB-C adapter.

Comes with a foam windscreen to reduce wind noise during outdoor use.

    2. Shure MVL

    Omnidirectional condenser microphone.

Compact, durable, and includes a windscreen for outdoor noise reduction.

Connects via a 3.5mm TRRS jack.

    3. PowerDeWise Professional Lavalier Microphone

    Budget-friendly with good sound quality.

Comes with a wind muff, extension cable, and adapter for versatility.

Works with most Android phones and includes an adapter if needed.

    4. BOYA BY-M1

    Highly affordable option.

Comes with a 20ft cable and switchable modes for smartphones and cameras.

Includes a foam windscreen, which helps reduce ambient noise.

    5. Movo PM10 Deluxe

    Compact and budget-friendly.

Includes a windscreen for noise protection outdoors.

Compatible with smartphones via 3.5mm TRRS.

For the best performance while walking outdoors, also consider a small portable windscreen or “deadcat” for more aggressive wind protection, especially in windy conditions.

  3. Dan Thompson says:

I’ve been listening for years, and this is probably the cleanest audio I have ever heard. It was so clean. In fact, I thought you were in a studio until I heard the first car go by. Even then I barely heard it. Your voice came through crystal clear, but I could not even hear the steady thump thump of your feet walking.
