Space Carrier Avalon

I’ve been a fan boy for Glynn Stewart for a while now. This wraps up his various SF franchises with the Castle Federation series. He has another series that’s Urban Fantasy, but I haven’t followed him out to that yet. No fault of Glynn. UF and I don’t see eye-to-eye.

Castle Federation – and Space Carrier Avalon – is straight up military SF in the finest tradition. I ripped through the first three books in this series in a matter of days last year but I missed the fourth book’s release. An oversight I intend to remedy. This series has enough pew-pew to scratch the itch for action and enough characterization to make you care about who gets killed. I thoroughly enjoyed these.

But don’t take my word for it. As always, grab a sample and see for yourself.

The Terran Privateer

I’ve been following Glynn’s work since I got turned on by Space Carrier Avalon and Starship Mage. We were going to be in a box this month, until Amazon’s decided that wasn’t going to happen. I admire Glynn’s work and his ability to turn out great stories.

The Terran Privateer is a military sf with a good dollop of intrigue stirred into the action. When Earth is conquered, Annette Bond is left in command of the only warship left and her mission seems impossible. Glynn spins out a yarn where things are seldom what they seem and where the story changes dramatically with each new reveal. I enjoyed it so much I was disappointed when the sequel wasn’t available.

I’ve heard a rumor that book two might be coming out soon, which would make this a good time to grab a sample of The Terran Privateer and see what you think.

Starship’s Mage

starship_mageI don’t remember who turned me onto this series. Probably Deb Geary. Glynn Stewart’s ability to blend science fiction and science fantasy floored me when I read this volume. Like many writers starting in recently, he tried the serial approach and, I assume, learned – as most do if they keep at it – that people will wait until the serial is complete before picking up the first one. Once burned, twice shy.

The omnibus edition holds all five serial episodes and does a good job of sweeping the reader along in a breath-taking vision of starships powered by magic and the toll it takes on those who must fly them. It hooked me immediately and kept me turning pages thought this volume and every volume since.

Stewart has just published the fourth book in his series and it’s just as good as the rest.

If you’re looking for a different take on interstellar navigation, you might want to grab a sample of Starship’s Mage and give it a try.
