Happy Holidays

Amazon.com

I’m working on the paperback now. With any luck, I’ll have that ready by Christmas.

Next: Cape Grace
Then: Barbarian at the Gate

The manuscript has gone to Podium. It will be at least a couple of months before they get it recorded and produced.

I’m looking for Ravenwood’s audiobook files Real Soon Now.

  1. Well, a happy holiday surprise! Thank you, Sar. Very much appreciated. As will the Audible books be. I’ve been looking for an excuse to re-read the Ravenswood stories, and these will be the perfect excuse.

  2. Well it was a good read, but im highly surprised that the welkies were never mentioned in this book, i honestly thought al or chief stevens would get one, not sure if you forgot or if your moving away from them. Just felt incomplete without them. With all that happened with ish struggling to find himself that he never rubbed his while in deep thought.

    1. Whelkies go to the people who need them. Neither Al nor the chief fell into that category.

He never did. I wonder why that was? Probably just sloppiness on my part.

      😉

      1. Dont get me wrong it was a great read, i power read it on my day off and couldnt put it down. Just felt it was missing a tad bit that has been a factor in the other books, i really dont want to say too much and leave any spoilers for people who havent read it. Cant wait for the next one

    2. I’m glad you noticed that too because I thought I was but picking.
Plus side I’m re reading the entire “Ishmael Wang” cycle because somehow I either invented a memory of his Welkie being destroyed in the assassination attempt and no longer trust my memory.

      1. Actually, Ish left his whelkie with Greta after she was killed and took hers in remembrance; I believe it was a shearwater.

Good thing Ish has a few left; some new people have been added to the roster who might benefit. We shall see.

        1. Actually Ish left his with Ms Maloney when he took Greta’s. I suspect he is going to need one for Natalya before much longer.

  3. “Barbarian at the Gate” is part of what series or is it a new story? I’ve been wracking my mind but I keep drawing a blank. I just downloaded the new book, perfect timing, I was looking for a good book to read. Thank you, Sir.

    1. A new series set in the Tanyth Fairport universe. I haven’t done anything with it yet so there’s no reason for you to recognize it.

    2. Thanks for the info, I love that series as well. I really enjoyed reading the latest book. Tied everything into neat little bows for our holidays! You keep writing and I’ll keep reading.

  4. Loved the new book…and you are eventually continuing on? Please?! Missed the wood whelkies although loved the tea cups…keep writing please.

      1. Yay bravo! I just re read all of the Seeker series and am now re-starting the three about Nat and Zoya. I lose track between books and have to revisit but I enjoy them just as much the second or third time. Please keep writing them and I’ll keep buying!

      2. I’m delighted that they’ll be back. Thank you so much.

I hope you have a happy holiday and prosperous new year.

  5. About halfway through you mention David Burnside. Is this the same Burnside who tormented the Tinker’s crew?

    1. I’ve been wondering since the first “Seeker” book whether Burnside had escaped to Toe Hold space and whether he would show up to cause grief for Ish again. Guess not.

  6. There are two characters who I’m hoping we’ll see again. Mr. VonIckless and Bev.

I’ve probably said this before but I can sit and read and re-read works by six authors:

    Larry Niven
    James P Hogan
    Isaac Asimov
    Arthur C Clark
    The incomparable Robert Heinlein
And last, but not least, Nathan Lowell

Everyone on this list can create characters and settings that never become stale – no matter how many times I reread them. It’s almost as if they take on lives of their own and when I sit down and pick up a book, I’m catching up with a good friend.

    1. In Ashes Born we found out that Mr. von Ickles had made Captain and was flying for Confederated Freight. We also found out that Bev is married and flying for her family’s CoOp.

      1. Yep, aware of that, but hoping against hope to see them involved in an upcoming story or two….

  7. Congratulations Nathan …

This is an absolutely wonderful book. You have a sense for ship/crew that warms a reader’s heart. It’s special and I suspect it’s part of the reason that I love your characters. I suppose the fact that you make me want to live in their universe says something about your connection with something deeper than SF and the joys of leisure reading. Great story-telling pointing to something larger … Nice

  8. Another FINE story Cap’n! Thank you so much for seeing me through another Christmas and New Years. I know you said we would revisit Ishmael and Co in the future, maybe the Core Worlds? Its your story to tell and I will let you plot a course to hell and back 🙂 Best wishes to all in this New Year!

  9. Kudos as usual, sar! Been waiting with ‘baited breath, because of a bit of a cliff hanger at the end of “To Fire Called”. Ish and Pip we’re watching Brill and her husband get off the shuttle. I kind of expected Chapter 1 of By Darkness Forged” to begin there with the identification of her husband (Steve from the Calhoun, perhaps) and some continuity with Telluride. Maybe a Chapter 0 update?

The entire series teaches important life lessons, very much like the life lessons found in classic literature, but much more readable. Look forward to more from great story telling, if you please, sar.

    1. I’m honestly surprised that readers expected that meeting to happen. If it were going to, it would have been in Fire. It was never in the cards.

  10. Hi Nathan,
Haven’t commented in a long time. Just wanted to let you know I’m still reading your books.
I do buy the Kindle, but I have a beautiful bookcase reserved for a collection of my favorite science fiction author’s books. Since you are a favorite, I’ve bought all but South Coast.
Just found out today about 3 more in print & got them right away.
So I Thank You for your efforts. (I also get the Audible versions. Your reading was best, but the books sound great now too.)

There is a book I read years ago. It’s “Mistwalker”, by Denise Lopes Heald, copyright 1994.
I mention it because my copy is worn, but I haven’t been able to replace it- I can’t find it, or the author.
I would really miss that book. My favorite books are like old friends; I’ll read them once a year.
If the grid goes down, know that I’ll still be reading your books, among others, lol.

    Take Care,
    Shauna, in Florida
