Science Fiction

In January, 2007, I sat down at my word processor to see if I could write a novel-length work of science fiction. I was tired of the save-the-universe stories where the hero was a king or the captain of the ship. I wanted to know what that famous red-shirted crewman did before he got sent on the Away Team and killed. I wanted to think about what it would do to our vision of the universe if we sent out freighters instead of frigates, sent an airline and not an air force.

The result is The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper.

The main narrative consists of the Trader’s Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. All six books in the series are available at Podiobooks.com or as free audio downloads on the iTunes music store.

Currently, I’m working on Cape Grace — the sequel to South Coast, book one in a spin off series that explores the life of a South Coast shaman.

Over the years, I’ve been honored with six Parsec Award finalists and in 2011 I became the first person to win back-to-back Parsec Awards in the Long Form category for Owner’s Share.

  1. What about those of us willing to actually pay for the privilege of NOT being read to? I can only find the first three in the series as ebooks! Downloaded and enjoyed them from Amazon, and would appreciate the rest of the story in text.
    Thanks!

    1. Unfortunately, you’ve stumbled on the series while it’s still in text production. I signed with Ridan in Jan, 2010, and so far, all they’ve published is the first three. They’ve committed to the rest, but I’m restricted to their timeline.

FWIW, I’m going to start self publishing some of the titles — starting with Ravenwood by the end of October.

      1. I’m sure you’re getting tired of all of us obsessed texties whining about getting the rest of the books out in print or in e-book format. It’s partially your own fault – for writing such darned good stories! I’m like a kid at summer camp checking the mail every day, hoping for that care package from home!

I’ll continue to wait….with a bare minimum of patience and a overabundance of enthusiasm….for the rest of the books in kindle format.

  2. I discovered and devoured the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper books quite recently and I’ve been recommending your books to my friends ever since! I’m just wondering if you are planning to continue Ishmael’s story anytime soon?

  3. Recently discovered the golden age series. Thank you for your work, but you left us hanging with Mr. Wong.

I am dying to see if Owners Share marked his beginning or his end. Please dont keep us waiting too long.

    Thanks again

  4. I’m like everyone else, have read the first three Solar Clipper books on my kindle and loved them….I’m ready to spend on the next ones…I wish your publishing company would hurry up…These were absolutely fantastic. I loved the way you’ve moved Ishmael’s story along and how it’s not about cruising the galaxy and being heroic in the “go out and beat them all up” sense.

  5. I made it to full share and really want the rest. I would prefer to read them simply because all of the characters currently have there own voices established in my imagination. Let your publisher know WE ARE WAITING. I don’t need paper, I use a Kindle.

  6. I always wondered how you were able to describe the life on a ship so well but now reading that you were a Costie I understand being in the navy and enjoying your books reminds me of my own adventurers with crew on board and all the port visited thanks, and I can’t wait to read your second book for South Coast.

  7. I am patiently awaiting the Kindle continuing saga of Ish. I’m more then willing to pay as are the people who I’ve turned on to your writing. There’s a lot of junk out there not worth the price charged but your writing far exceeded so much of that out there. I found your books hard to put down. I’ll amplify what Jim Hynes said and sya that I’d rather read then listen to your works because each character along with the imagined sights and sounds have already been set in my mind. Kudos to you and your writing.

  8. Hello Nathan,

I purchased and downloaded “A Light in the Dark” from your site and was pleased to find that I could load the file to Calibre and convert it to the different readers that are in my household, unlike the books that I have been forced to purchase from Amazon.com, which are kindle only.

Baen has a similar program, the ebooks are available in some basic formats, but not blocked from conversion if you have more than one machine or an off main format.

Looking forward to “Double Share” and the rest of the series.

    -Dan

  9. Nathan,

I absolutely loved reading your trader clipper series and would love to read/ or hear more. It is a fabulous series and I can not seem to get enough.

  10. Yahoo!!!!!!! Double share just hit amazon in kindle format!!!!!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!!

  11. Just finished Double Share. Ish just continues to grow and his world gets more clear as time goes on. Awainting the next one!!!! Thanks for the memories . . .

  12. I want to thank you for four very enjoyable reads [Quarter Share, Half Share, Full Share and Double Share]. I wait with “bated breath” for the ebook releases of the remaining two books.

I am an avid reader and greatly enjoy ‘Space Opera’ in particular. I devoured your books in less then a week and look forward to reading more of this series and your writings in general. I suppose I’ll have to try some of your work in audio form too. I had been in the doldrums over inability to find something new from a new writer that I could really get into. I am so happy I stumbled upon your stories. Please keep up the good work and you’ll keep an avid fan in me.

    Thank you,
    Jonathan

  13. Nathan,

I am in the process of rereading (listening) to the series, even better than the first time. Thanks for the many hours of enjoyment, looking forward to your next book.

  14. I discovered these on the Kindle, devoured all three within a couple of weeks. Then I started a regular search on Amazon looking for Double Share, getting pissed off and frustrated for far too long before checking out the podcasts. It was well worth it and now I’m into the last 2/3rds of Owner’s Share.
If you love these stores as I do then get the podcasts and continue the adventure. Thanks for this great series. I love the low-key yet enthralling look at a life I’d love to live. It’s really very special.

  15. Just want to say thanks for reading and writing these! I read through Double Share, then visited Podiobooks.com and downloaded the lot.

I wouldn’t have gotten my apartment packed up for a cross country move without you in my ear. I’ve listened to the entire series more than once. And we listened to Double Share in the car for the 14 hour drive to our new home.

One of our best friends just sent us a “thanks for linking me” message regarding this series: she is doing a multi-day move/drive across the country and has started with Quarter Share for company.
